At the Flower Mound Town Council meeting May 4, 2015 longtime Environmental Conservation Commissioner and Mound Foundation Board member Alton Bowman stated the following about Flower Mound's Disappearing Tree Canopy:

"The exemptions to the tree ordinance for SPA's and business went into effect in 2000. We are giving 20 to 30 average tree permits for specimen trees per year for these projects. They should have to plant 2.5 times the caliper inches of the tree removed in new 3" trees. This is averaging 500 trees per year that aren't being planted or $375.00 per tree. Last year we lost 500 trees or $187,000.00 in cash for the tree fund because of this exemption. Over the last 14 years it amounts to 7,000 trees that weren't replaced or $2,400.000.00. We had a canopy of 38% when we started and now we are down to 25% and falling every year."
