Town Council Vote on Master Plan Update 2013

Rick Lust, Flower Mound Mayor from 1988-1990

Letter to the Town Council December 7, 2013

Honorable Mayor and Council,

I’m here tonight to ask that you vote no on the proposed Master Plan amendments before you.

Flower Mound’s Master Plan is truly the voice of its citizens regarding the vision of this town’s future. The Plan is the result of thousands of hours of study and research and feedback from the town’s citizens by the professional planning firm of Wallace Roberts and Todd. (WRT). The Plan provides the tools to create the vision that the majority of the town’s people have consistently asked for since the plans inception in 1981. It is a balanced plan that accounts for a wide spectrum of residential and non-residential zoning giving us a solid tax base. The plan also calls for preserving some of the original rural character of the town. It is this aspect that sets Flower Mound apart for all other suburbs in the DFW area, and one of the prime reasons folks move here.

This plan has served the Town well for the last 32 years and has cost its citizens hundreds of thousands of dollars over that period. I would argue this money was well spent. The Plan gives the citizens who move and live here the peace of mind of knowing the direction of the town’s future. It has also provided a stable environment for the development community to do business in.

The amendments before you to amend the plan will, in reality, gut the plan.

In the final analysis the question is “who do you think should determine the Town’s future? The citizens of the town, or the development community” Your vote tonight will give the citizens the answer to that question.
